We have entered the average power consumption for most appliances, so please note that there might be some differences between our calculations and your appliances.
On-grid, off-grid and hybrid systems:
Most solar installations are either off-grid (stand-alone and completely separated from the regular electricity supply) and on-grid (where the system is tied to the regular supply and excess solar power is actually sold back to the electricity supplier). Most installations in Nigeria will be somewhere in between. That means users are not 100% reliant on solar power. Whenever the regular electricity supply is on, the solar panels (in the daytime) can recharge the batteries, uninterrupted. More importantly, the batteries may also be recharged by the regular power supply, through the inverter. What is the implication of this for Nigerian users? Well... it means that when you calculate the your daily wattage, below, only a certain percentage of that should be from your solar panels. The percentage depends on how much regular electricity you get. As a rough guide we will expect anyone who has about 6 hours of electricity every other day to start with a solar panels plan that provides half their daily usage as calculated, below. If this proves inadequate, they can always add additional panels and/or batteries.
